Health Funding Campaign

Economical resources are always a very important issue of every project and in the case of el 20 it is not the exception. 

In all the years that the project of action lab (formerly Aalto Lab México) has been creating strategies to help this community,  it’s been concluded that they are in a poverty trap that is fed from several angles, but most especially it’s due to health issues. 

The last years of work in the Lab project have allowed to calculate that it’s needed almost a quarter million pesos (some 12500 dollars) to set a starting point for them to escape the poverty trap caused by illnesses that must be treated at very high costs almost all of the times, because they need to do so outside the community and because they don’t have a health insurance to cover this type of problems.

In the last jam, at the end of this past winter, we have proposed several alternatives to deal with this issue and to make campaigns to gather the needed resources for this. We put on the table the possibility to divide the strategy in several topics like branches. Even if we have this main goal of gathering this amount (of a quarter million pesos) we could start with something smaller than that and to campaign for basic needs that could cover some general issues within the community. 

In meetings with people of the community we learned that they don’t have even the most basic medical resources like first aid kits and even sometimes they cannot have three meals per day. If we can cover these issues as a first goal it could be a very good start and a way to test funding campaigns for broader objectives for the health problems within the community and for other objectives that the main project of the Lab wants to cover as well.

But there are several challenges. The first is to balance the needs of the whole project and avoid hindering between the different subprojects. As was said before, the health issues are making the community fall into a poverty trap and maybe this must be one of the main axis of gravitation for the project, but at the same time the followed strategies to give economical resources to this important matter must be designed in order to not interfere with the present or future entry of assets for the other objectives that are also included in the aims of the Lab.

As a possible strategy, we proposed the idea of ​​offering donors the option of sponsoring a piece of jungle. This will give the inhabitants of El 20 the opportunity to have an annual or monthly income from taking care of their lands and not having the need to sell them due to a medical emergency.

At the same time, all offered strategies must consider to guarantee the autonomy of the community in the decision making once the resources are obtained. So it must be established with them the type of resource that they are going to receive, the magnitudes of them, the frequencies, etc., so they can manage in the most proper way how they are going to use them in the long run. Because it is very different to manage a bank account (that could be established after achieving the big goal of the funding of a quarter million) than possible donations in kind (that have been proposed as part of the smaller goals to cover some of their health needs), for example. 

In the jam we established good starting parameters and now they must be unwrapped in a broader and more explicative sense and to develop some of the best alternatives.

It was a great experience to be able to participate in the ALM 2021 jam. It was an intense weekend, full of learning, coexistence with people from all over the world and great enthusiasm for the results obtained.

Los recursos económicos son siempre un tema muy importante de todo proyecto y en el caso del 20 no es la excepción.

En todos los años que el proyecto de action lab (antes Aalto Lab México) ha ido creando estrategias para ayudar a esta comunidad, se ha concluido que están en una trampa de pobreza que se alimenta desde varios ángulos, pero más especialmente por cuestiones de salud. .

Los últimos años de trabajo en el proyecto del Lab han permitido calcular que se necesita casi un cuarto de millón de pesos (unos 12500 dólares) para poner un punto base para que escapen de la trampa de la pobreza que provocan enfermedades que deben ser tratadas a costos altísimos casi todo el tiempo, porque necesitan hacerlo fuera de la comunidad y porque no tienen un seguro médico que cubra este tipo de problemas.

En el último jam, a finales de este reciente invierno, planteamos varias alternativas para abordar este tema y hacer campañas para reunir los recursos necesarios para ello. Pusimos sobre la mesa la posibilidad de dividir la estrategia en varios temas como si fueran ramales. Incluso si tenemos el objetivo principal de reunir esta cantidad (de un cuarto de millón de pesos), podríamos comenzar con algo más pequeño que eso y hacer campaña por las necesidades básicas que podrían cubrir algunos problemas generales dentro de la comunidad.

En reuniones con personas de la comunidad nos enteramos de que no tienen ni los recursos médicos más básicos como botiquines de primeros auxilios e incluso a veces no pueden tener tres comidas al día. Si podemos cubrir estos aspectos como un primer objetivo, podría ser un muy buen comienzo y una forma de probar campañas de financiación para objetivos más amplios para los problemas de salud dentro de la comunidad y para otros temas que el proyecto principal del Lab también quiere cubrir. 

Pero existen varios desafíos. El primero es equilibrar las necesidades de todo el proyecto y evitar trabas entre los diferentes subproyectos. Como se dijo anteriormente, los temas de salud están haciendo que la comunidad caiga en la trampa de la pobreza y tal vez este debe ser uno de los principales ejes de gravitación del proyecto, pero al mismo tiempo las estrategias seguidas para dotar de recursos económicos a este importante asunto deben estar diseñado para no interferir con la entrada presente o futura de activos para los demás objetivos que también se incluyen en los fines del Lab.

Como posible estrategia, propusimos la idea de ofrecer a los donantes la opción de patrocinar un pedazo de selva. Esto le dará a los habitantes de El 20 la oportunidad de tener un ingreso anual o mensual por cuidar sus tierras y no tener la necesidad de venderlas por una emergencia médica.

Al mismo tiempo, todas las estrategias ofrecidas deben considerar garantizar la autonomía de la comunidad en la toma de decisiones una vez que se obtienen los recursos. Por lo que se debe establecer con ellos el tipo de recurso que van a recibir, las magnitudes de los mismos, las frecuencias, etc., para que puedan gestionar de la forma más adecuada cómo los van a utilizar a largo plazo. Porque es muy diferente administrar una cuenta bancaria (que podría establecerse después de lograr el gran objetivo de la financiación de un cuarto de millón) que las posibles donaciones en especie (que se han propuesto como parte de los objetivos menores para cubrir parte de su salud. necesidades), por ejemplo.

En el jam establecimos buenos parámetros de partida y ahora hay que desplegarlos en un sentido más amplio y explicativo y desarrollar algunas de las mejores alternativas.

Fue una gran experiencia poder participar en la jam de ALM 2021. Fue un fin de semana intenso, lleno de aprendizaje, convivencia con personas de todo el mundo y mucha ilusión por los resultados obtenidos.
